CSI Newsletter – August 2017

Stolen money and CSI Safeguard – what do they all have in common? Well, in two words, polygraph testing. And also a reminder that neglecting to get job candidates checked out can have some nasty consequences that could easily outweigh the cost of preventative measures, such as pre-employment screening.

Fraud

Would you hire a convicted fraudster to handle your financial affairs? Then again, you wouldn’t know unless you ran all necessary checks before hiring the individual, would you?

This is what happened to the CEO of a Gauteng-based business who discovered money missing from her office late one afternoon. Given that a number of trusted employees have access to her office, narrowing down the likely culprit down to a pool of one or two was an impossible task.

The problem with cases like this is that trust is very fragile, especially in a professional environment. Even hinting at some kind of accusation or investigation could irreparably damage the trust that exists between employer and employee, and even lead to more damaging legal consequences down the line.

However operating a business whilst knowingly losing money due to theft has immediate and very tangible operational consequences, which is why CSI Africa was called in.

Following a number of polygraph tests of other employees, the Assistant Bookkeeper was called into the examination room. During the pre-polygraph interview she confessed to having a criminal record for fraud which she got prior to her engagement at the employer in question.

She was also the only employee to fail her polygraph test.

CSI Safeguard – From R695 per employee

CSI Safeguard is our newest product offering which was introduced in July. It provides a robust layer of protection that can be added to any hiring strategy to vet prospective employees. With CSI Safeguard all prospective employees can be checked and vetted to determine whether they pose an obvious and immediate danger to your business.

CSI Safeguard combines thorough background screening, criminal record checks, and a pre-employment polygraph examination to give you an in-depth look at the person you’re about to hire. Which, in plain speak, means a reduced potential for unwelcome surprises.
