Polygraph testing might not be a glamorous job. It may not even be all that exciting. Every now and then, however, we come across a case worthy of a quizzical raised eyebrow. Such is the case of an employee who claimed he was robbed, and then got more than he bargained for from his employer.
We were called in by the client to help determine the truthfulness of said employee who claimed he was robbed of a certain amount of the employer’s money. Clearly something didn’t add up regarding the events as recounted by employee to employer, or a case would have been opened with the police instead.
We agreed to perform a polygraph examination on the unfortunate employee who, at this stage of the investigation, may well be innocent. After all, many of our cases result in the falsely accused being cleared of all suspicion, so why shouldn’t this particular individual join that club?
But it was not to be. During the pre-test interview the employee spilled the proverbial beans that, no, he wasn’t robbed, and yes, he took the money. And yet, although not robbed, the money was taken from him. Curious.
As it turns out, the employee not only took the money, but lost it while gambling… during working hours. And all this before the very first heartbeat registered on the polygraph machine. Confessions are a staple of CSI Africa’s polygraph testing and usually leads to happy clients.
But if there is to be any praise in this case, it should go to the employer. Where other employers would have dismissed the employee in question, or reported him to the police, this employer took the road less travelled and enrolled the offending individual in a recovery program for gambling addicts. Respect.
Diagnostic polygraph testing differs from other examinations because questioning is incident-specific. It gives you a chance to uncover hidden truths, find out which witness or suspect statements are likely to be deceptive, and speed your investigation toward a successful close.
